Peek at our Week (Sept 14, 2013)
We had a pretty busy week of school.
Which I guess by now I should be perfectly used to.
For some reason though, I was tired, cranky, and had a hard time dealing with the long days. It could have been adding in Olivia’s new routine, or it could have been staying up too late and the build of fatigue that followed…
My parents crashed with us for most of the week, trying to get a few things repaired in their RV. I’m sure they were hoping to dry off too, but alas, the rain came down all week long.
I’m still waiting to get the boys’ math books ordered.
In the meantime, I’m having to get very creative with the resources we already have.
Isaac worked with Cuisnar Rods and multiplication families.
He wrote out descriptions of the GeoSolids and then later in the week, got to figure out the volume of each. Fun stuff!
I’m working on multiplication with Nate. He is not enjoying it. At all. Numbers just aren’t his thing, which is totally ok. We just have to find the way he learns them best. This week we did quiz’s with the magnetic board and filled in 0-2 on the multiplication grid.
Elaina requested to work on her time telling skills. Since she is learning her skip counting by 5’s, it was perfect timing actually.
She’s coming along nicely in her Horizon’s Math book. It continues to be one part of her day that she usually doesn’t complain about doing. Usually…
Olivia did Bear Sequencing for her math this week. I'll post the rest of what she did in a separate blog post.
We were able to mostly finish up with the Feliform unit in our Zoology studies. I’m trying to figure out if we will put away our science studies for a bit and focus on History again, like we did last year…
We’ve had record rain this summer, and lots and lots of flooding. Thursday we had water leaking into the basement window. Saul climbed up to check the gutters and they were clogged with something and not allowing the water to drain properly. Once he fixed it, the water stopped leaking down into the window well.
On Friday my parents left to go north and spend some time with my uncle. We had a nice week with them here! In a few more weeks they are moving back to Tucson. I’m sure they will be ready to dry off in the desert after all this wild rain we’ve had here!
Friday night was my Girl’s night out and we learned how to play Qwirkle. It’s actually a game that we have at home, but have only used with the girls as a sorting type activity. Anyway, I loved it and had to teach Saul how to play. Of course he went all strategy on me, and made it not so fun, but I still beat him!
Our amazing friends shared a wealth of their crop from the season. They gave us tomatoes, jalepenos, zucchini, squash, potatoes, purple onions, and the sweetest corn I have ever had! Thank you Farmer Ty!
I roasted the tomatoes and chilis for a super spicy salsa. We ate some of the zucchini but I ended up shredding a lot to make zucchini bread, muffins, and cookies.
While my parents were here, Olivia and I made yummy brownies in my new Brownie Pan. (Thank you Mom!) And got all the fixings for Ice Cream Sundaes.
Saul works this weekend, and we are expected to get a ton more rain. We are just planning to stay in and do a lot of nothing.
